T-Budding Graft Process

The most popular kind of grapevine grafting, T-Budding presents an almost foolproof means of grafting your vines.

Despite its popularity, however, T-Budding has to be executed within a specific period–the intervention period— which lasts on average, 4 to 8 weeks.

The t-bud grafting period falls between early March and May/early June. It is necessary to begin the grafting process within these four months to ensure success.

Step 1: Decapitate the Vine

The vine is decapitated and left sitting for approximately eight days to drain the plant of water and moisture.

Step 2: Place the Buds

‍

After these eight days, the grafting process begins by placing two buds of the specified varietal in between a T-shaped incision (hence the name) on the vine. Incisions are made using a special grafting knife.

Step 3: Wrap the Buds

‍

Buds are wrapped with one-inch wide white tape to keep them in place.

‍Step 4: Expel Excess Water From Vine

‍

A hand saw is used to slice the bottom of the vine on both sides to expel excess water to prevent the buds from drowning. Once the grafts are finished, the client only needs to monitor the vine, making cuts with a hand saw, over the original cuts, to help expel water as the plant grows.

Rootstock Grafting

‍

Rootstock grafting boosts vineyard efficiency, plant lifespan, pest and disease resistance, and resistance to cold weather. The scion of your preferred varietal is grafted onto the rootstock of a hardier plant, to produce sturdier, more adaptable grape varieties.
